Columbia Main Street

Columbia Town Square is located on the south bank of the Duck River—the second-largest river in Middle Tennessee and a major tributary of the Tennessee River. The Columbia Commercial Historic District comprises 91 buildings arranged around the Maury County Courthouse on the Public Square in south-central Tennessee. These buildings, which span a six-block area, are predominantly commercial, with churches and government buildings interspersed throughout. Dating back to the 1820s, the district features examples from each subsequent decade and reflects a variety of architectural styles. Twenty-six buildings within the district are considered non-contributing due to alterations or construction that have compromised their original integrity.
Columbia Main Street, established in 1984 as one of the first five Main Street programs in Tennessee, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and economic vitality of Columbia through strategic investment and revitalization of the Downtown District. By focusing on purposeful design, dynamic promotion, and community collaboration, our efforts create a vibrant and welcoming downtown that encourages people to live, work, and visit. Columbia Main Street is proudly accredited by both the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and Main Street America.

For over 35 years, the Main Street movement has helped communities across the country breathe new life into their historic downtowns—and Columbia has proudly been part of that journey from the start.
Established in 1984, Columbia Main Street was among Tennessee’s first designated programs, and for over four decades, we’ve worked to strengthen the heart of our community: our downtown.
Main Street America™ now includes a network of more than 2,000 downtowns and commercial districts nationwide, and Columbia stands out for its deep commitment to preservation, inclusivity, and thoughtful growth. With over 25 years of national accreditation, Columbia Main Street continues to prove that when we invest in our core, we build a stronger, more vibrant city for everyone.
